Ethiopian Airlines has announced plans to inaugurate three new domestic airports and commence passenger flights to the destinations by mid-April 2026.

The new airports are located in Negele Borena, Gore Metu and Debre Markos. The airline said it will operate three weekly passenger flights to each destination.

With the addition of the three routes, Ethiopian Airlines’ domestic network will expand to 26 destinations. The move is expected to strengthen air connectivity across Ethiopia and improve access to regional centres.

Commenting on the development, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, described the expansion as a significant milestone.

“The inauguration of these three new airports, along with the commencement of passenger services, represents a major milestone for Ethiopian Airlines and for the nation as a whole,” Tasew said.

He added that the expansion reflects the airline’s commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia and driving economic growth and regional development.

“Our mission is to build an inclusive and integrated air transport network that empowers communities, unlocks economic opportunities, and supports national development by making safe, reliable, and efficient air travel accessible to all,” he stated.

The airline also reaffirmed its focus on modernising the domestic travel experience. It said infrastructure renovation and service enhancements remain a priority as it integrates the new destinations into its network.

The development follows the inauguration of Yabello Airport in 2025, which became the carrier’s 23rd domestic destination at the time.

Industry observers say the latest expansion underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ strategy of strengthening its domestic footprint while maintaining its position as Africa’s largest network carrier.
