Ejiofor Calls for Overhaul of Nigeria’s Security Architecture, Cites Rights Violations

The session featured security agency representatives alongside leading human rights lawyers, including Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Chief Femi Falana (SAN).

Social crusader Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s national security architecture, stressing that reforms should prioritize citizens’ rights and safety.

In a midweek press statement titled “Citizens’ Rights in Chains, National Security in Myth: Brutal Truths from NBA-AGC,” Ejiofor reflected on discussions at the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference (NBA-AGC) in Enugu, particularly Tuesday’s session on “Citizens’ Rights and Security Concerns.”

The session featured security agency representatives alongside leading human rights lawyers, including Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Chief Femi Falana (SAN). According to Ejiofor, the dialogue exposed persistent concerns around arbitrary detention, poor detention conditions, lack of access to justice, and insufficient transparency within security agencies.

He urged the military, police, and DSS to adopt clear protocols for detention and ensure detainees have unhindered access to legal counsel. Ejiofor also advocated for structural and ethical reforms across security institutions to strengthen accountability and rebuild public trust.

Commending legal practitioners for holding security agencies accountable during the session, Ejiofor emphasized the need for sustained public scrutiny and legislative oversight to safeguard citizens’ rights. He added that he will share additional insights in forthcoming updates.
