Eagles stepping up under Chelle – Akpeyi

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has praised coach Eric Chelle for revitalising the Nigerian team, saying the players are showing renewed belief and discipline under his leadership.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has commended head coach Eric Chelle for transforming the Nigerian national team, saying the players are now performing with greater focus, confidence, and tactical awareness.

Speaking on SuperSport on Thursday following Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Benin Republic, Akpeyi noted that the team’s recent performances reflect Chelle’s growing influence since he took charge earlier in the year.

“Since Eric Chelle came in, there have been a lot of changes, and the players are stepping up,” Akpeyi said.

The former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper also heaped praise on star striker Victor Osimhen, describing him as the team’s driving force and a player capable of inspiring others through his commitment and quality.

“Whether you like it or not, in every team there is that superstar that you have — which is Victor Osimhen — and he has lived up to expectations,” Akpeyi added. “It shows why Galatasaray would be willing to pay any amount of money to retain him.”

Osimhen was the standout performer as Nigeria cruised past Benin Republic to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs. The 26-year-old striker scored a brilliant hat-trick, striking in the 3rd, 37th, and 51st minutes, before Frank Onyeka sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal.

Chelle’s arrival brought skepticism after a shaky start to the qualifiers, but the convincing win has renewed optimism within the camp. His tactical flexibility and man-management have been credited with improving the team’s chemistry and discipline.

Nigeria finished second in Group C with 17 points, just one behind leaders South Africa, earning a spot in the two-legged play-off that could determine their qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With confidence returning to the squad, Akpeyi believes the Super Eagles are once again showing the hunger and unity that define a team capable of competing on the world stage.
