Tragedy struck on Monday morning as bandits invaded a bustling market in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, attacking traders and residents during peak business hours. The assault, which occurred in Bashar district, saw the assailants storm the community on motorcycles, shooting indiscriminately and causing widespread panic.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the gunmen arrived in large numbers, taking advantage of the crowded market day to launch their attack. “They stormed the area, almost surrounding the community, and started shooting. Some of them went to the market straight away, where they picked five shop owners. We believe they targeted the market day to steal food items,” said Abdullahi Isma’il, a shop owner whose business was looted.
The attackers burgled and looted several shops and business centres, carting away large quantities of food items, consumables, and medicines. The market, known as a major trading hub attracting buyers from neighboring communities, was left deserted as traders and residents fled for safety.
Wase and its surrounding villages have been under repeated attacks from bandits in recent times, resulting in significant loss of lives and property. Monday’s incident adds to the rising wave of insecurity in Plateau State, where hundreds have been killed and displaced in recent months due to violent attacks.
Governor Caleb Muftwang has condemned the ongoing violence, describing the attacks as genocidal and an attempt at land grabbing. While the identities of the assailants remain uncertain, reports indicate that some of them speak foreign languages, further complicating security concerns in the region.
