After three decades of commanding the screen, Nollywood veteran Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has stepped behind the camera for the first time with her directorial debut, Mother’s Love.
The film, which has already screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, is set for nationwide cinema release on March 6, 2026 — coinciding with Omotola’s 30th anniversary in Nollywood.
Mother’s Love tells the story of Adebisi, played by Noray Nehita, a young woman raised in a wealthy but tightly controlled household. Her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year becomes a turning point as she experiences independence for the first time.
During her service year, she forms an unexpected bond with Obaro, portrayed by Olumide Oworu, whose life in the vibrant Makoko waterfront community sharply contrasts with her privileged upbringing.
Their growing relationship puts her at odds with her father, played by Ifeanyi Kalu, whose rigid expectations and hidden family secrets threaten to unravel everything.
As tensions rise, the emotional focus shifts to Labake — the quiet but resilient mother, portrayed by Omotola herself — who must find the strength to protect her daughter’s future.
The film explores themes of classism, generational conflict, maternal sacrifice, and the complexity of love within Nigerian family structures. Supporting cast members include Lilian Afegbai and Nosa Rex.
With Mother’s Love, Omotola transitions from screen legend to filmmaker, signaling a new chapter in her celebrated career.
The film opens in cinemas nationwide on March 6, 2026.
