The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described Abuja as one of the safest and most peaceful cities in Nigeria, attributing the achievement to both deliberate government security measures and the commitment of residents to peaceful coexistence.
Delivering his Independence Day anniversary message on Wednesday, Wike commended FCT residents for “intentionally choosing to live together in peace and harmony in spite of a few distractions.”
He noted that the calm in the capital city was no accident but the product of consistent collaboration between citizens and security agencies.
“Consequently, the FCT has become one of the most peaceful places to reside in the entire country. This is not only due to the security measures we have put in place, but also because of zero tolerance of residents for insecurity, and their readiness to promote peace in every part of the Territory,” he said.
While celebrating Abuja’s record, Wike cautioned against complacency. He urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious movements, and continue to support law enforcement agencies in keeping the city secure.
“I appeal to all residents to go about their lawful businesses, be watchful over their neighbourhoods, and report all suspicious movements to the law enforcement agents,” the Minister added.
The Minister also reminded residents that the FCT will again set the pace for Nigeria’s political season when Area Council elections take place in February 2026. He appealed for peaceful campaigns and called on voters to elect leaders with integrity and vision.
“Come February 2026, the FCT will kick off the electioneering process in the country as residents head to the polls to elect new chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. I encourage everyone to come out en masse to vote for leaders who evidently have their people’s interest at heart,” Wike said.
Wike’s comments came days after the tragic death of 29-year-old Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who reportedly died after jumping from her apartment in Katampe, Abuja, while trying to escape armed robbers.
Describing the incident as “tragic and unacceptable,” Wike pledged full support for ongoing police investigations and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring safety for all residents.
