The Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, has reaffirmed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s commitment to reforming and strengthening the nation’s power sector. Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the commissioning of the new headquarters of the Nigerian Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO) in the Asokoro District, Shettima emphasized that energy security is the foundation of national progress.

“Above all, it requires that governance, transparency, and accountability remain the guiding principles of this institution. This commissioning must symbolise a new phase of modernisation, efficiency, and forward-thinking leadership,” the Vice President said. He commended NELMCO’s board, management, and staff for their dedication, describing them as “custodians of the sector’s credibility.”

Senator Shettima stressed that NELMCO plays a crucial role in addressing legacy challenges in the electricity sector. He noted that the new headquarters represents a renewed commitment to restoring confidence in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and creating a commercially viable, investment-ready energy sector.

The Vice President also called on private sector and international investors to support Nigeria’s power sector, affirming the government’s aim to provide a “transparent, predictable, and investor-friendly environment.”

Earlier, Wale Edun, Vice Chairman of the NELMCO Board and Minister of Finance, highlighted that a stable power sector would bolster SMEs and support broader economic growth. Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu emphasized that the new headquarters demonstrates the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen sector liquidity and efficiently manage legacy liabilities, while decentralisation and liberalisation of power under the Electricity Act allows states to actively participate in electricity provision.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, represented by Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, noted that the new NELMCO head office would save government funds previously spent on rent, reflecting the administration’s commitment to efficiency.

NELMCO Managing Director and CEO Mojoyinoluwa Dekalu-Thomas added that the agency has evolved into a clearing house for legacy debt and has generated over NGN30 billion in revenue for the Federal Government.

The opening of the new headquarters is seen as a key milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing power sector reforms, aligning with the Tinubu administration’s drive for modernisation, efficiency, and sustainable energy security.
