Victor Osimhen Calls for Total Commitment as Nigeria Aims to Rectify World Cup Qualifier Mistakes

Super Eagles striker urges teammates to give their all in upcoming World Cup qualifiers, starting with Rwanda.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has emphasized the importance of full commitment from the team as they strive to correct mistakes made in the early phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

After a challenging start that saw Nigeria draw three out of their first four matches, the team is now under the guidance of new head coach Eric Sekou Chelle.

Nigeria, who missed out on the 2022 World Cup after losing in a playoff to Ghana, have faced significant struggles in the current qualifiers.

Two different coaches, Jose Peseiro and Finidi George, were in charge for the first four games. Despite optimism, the results were disappointing—two draws and two losses. The team now finds itself trailing group leaders Rwanda by four points.

Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, has been one of the standout performers for Nigeria, and his return to the squad has been a major boost. Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s next qualifier against Rwanda, he reiterated the need for total dedication, both from himself and his teammates.

“We are in a tough situation, but I believe in this team,” Osimhen said. “Nigeria is a big country with millions of talented footballers. If you are lucky enough to wear this jersey, you must give everything. We have a coach now who is fully committed, and I believe we must follow his example.”

Osimhen revealed his conversation with the new coach, who expressed high expectations for the players. “He was very clear with me—he said that only those who are ready to fight and give their all will play. And I believe in that philosophy,” Osimhen shared.

The 24-year-old forward has been instrumental for both his club and country, and his return to the national team is expected to provide much-needed inspiration.

Nigeria has struggled in his absence, scoring only four goals in four games, compared to six goals in the same number of matches during the last World Cup qualifiers. Osimhen’s five goal contributions in the previous campaign highlight the kind of impact he is expected to have.

“We have no easy games from now on, starting with Rwanda,” said Moses Simon, another key player for the Super Eagles. “We are happy to have Victor back with us. He brings strength, energy, and confidence. We all have to fight for every point from here on out.”

The upcoming clash against Rwanda, scheduled for Friday, is pivotal for Nigeria’s World Cup hopes. In addition to Rwanda, the Super Eagles will face Zimbabwe on Tuesday, March 25th.

With the team now under the stewardship of Sekou Chelle, Osimhen remains confident that they can make up for lost ground and put themselves back in contention for a World Cup spot.

“It’s the dream of every player to go to the World Cup, and that’s my dream too,” Osimhen said. “We are all looking forward to this match against Rwanda, and we will be ready to correct our mistakes. We will give everything we have.”
