Former US President Donald Trump has said the United States Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to guarantee the free flow of energy supplies.

In a post shared Tuesday on his platform, Truth Social, Trump stated: “If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible.

“No matter what, the United States will ensure the FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD.”

He also announced that the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has been instructed to provide risk insurance and guarantees for maritime trade in the region.

The measure is primarily aimed at protecting energy shipments but will be available to all shipping companies operating in the area.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is regarded as one of the world’s most strategic maritime chokepoints.

It serves as the only sea passage from the Gulf to the open ocean, making it critical for global oil and gas exports.

Major oil-producing nations along the Gulf include Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.

Recent hostilities and reported threats by Iran to target vessels passing through the strait have unsettled global energy markets.

As tensions escalated, oil and gas prices recorded sharp increases, reflecting fears of supply disruptions in one of the world’s most vital energy corridors.
