A US congressional committee investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein on Monday released videos of depositions given by former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The former first couple appeared before the House Oversight Committee last week to testify about their past interactions with Epstein.
In her testimony, Hillary Clinton told lawmakers she did not know Epstein. Bill Clinton stated that he severed ties with the financier before his 2008 conviction on sex-related charges.
Bill Clinton said he had done “nothing wrong,” while Hillary Clinton urged the committee to question President Donald Trump under oath regarding his past association with Epstein.
Lawmakers should ask Trump “directly under oath about the tens of thousands of times he shows up in the Epstein files,” she said.
Being mentioned in documents released by the US Department of Justice does not imply wrongdoing. Neither Bill Clinton nor Trump has been formally accused of crimes related to Epstein.
Bill Clinton has previously acknowledged multiple interactions with Epstein. He confirmed flying several times on Epstein’s private jet in the early 2000s in connection with humanitarian initiatives linked to the Clinton Foundation. However, he denied ever visiting Epstein’s private Caribbean island, where the financier allegedly trafficked young women and girls to influential political and business figures.
Epstein was convicted in 2008 of soliciting sex from minors as young as 14. He died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide, though it has fueled widespread conspiracy theories.
The Clintons initially rejected subpoenas compelling their testimony but later agreed to appear after House Republicans threatened to hold them in contempt of Congress.
Democratic lawmakers have argued that the investigation is being used as a political tool to target Trump’s opponents rather than conduct legitimate oversight.
The closed-door depositions took place last week in Chappaqua, New York, where the Clintons reside.
