Ukraine is reportedly interested in importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Mozambique, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday, as the country struggles to meet energy needs following years of Russian attacks on its domestic production infrastructure.
Before the conflict with Russia, Ukraine met almost all of its gas requirements through domestic production. However, repeated Russian strikes have reportedly reduced the country’s output by about half, according to Andriy Pyshnyi. Last autumn, Russian forces intensified attacks on gas facilities concentrated in northeast and central frontline regions.
Speaking on the Telegram messaging app after a meeting with Daniel Chapo, Zelenskiy suggested that Kyiv could offer Mozambique support in countering its security challenges, particularly the Islamist insurgency affecting parts of the southern African country.
“Ukraine is interested in additional energy supplies. Mozambique is interested in Ukraine’s experience and technologies to strengthen its internal security and protect people from terror,” Zelenskiy said, without specifying potential LNG volumes.
Mozambique is a major gas producer in Africa, and in January the country, alongside TotalEnergies, announced the relaunch of a previously halted LNG project. The project is expected to produce up to 13 million metric tons of LNG annually, positioning Mozambique as a significant gas exporter.
Ukraine has not imported Russian gas since 2015 and has been diversifying its supply sources in recent years, including LNG from the U.S. delivered via terminals in Poland, the Baltic countries, and pipelines from Greece known as the Vertical Corridor.
According to European AGSI energy data, Ukraine has begun storing gas in underground facilities in preparation for the 2026–2027 heating season. Denys Shmyhal stated that the country intends to start the season with at least 13 billion cubic metres of gas in storage, roughly matching last year’s volume.
Since the onset of the war with Russia, Ukraine has not disclosed complete details of its gas import volumes, highlighting ongoing energy security challenges as the country seeks to diversify supply sources.
