U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday delivered a record-breaking State of the Union address, hailing a “turnaround for the ages” as he sought to reverse sagging poll numbers and shore up support ahead of this year’s crucial midterm elections.

Trump’s speech — lasting 1 hour and 48 minutes — marked the longest State of the Union in American history, surpassing previous record-holders, and was broadcast live across major television networks.

Addressing a joint session of Congress, the President repeatedly touted America’s economic and global standing, declaring the nation “bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before” and asserting that substantial achievements have been made under his leadership.

As U.S. naval and air forces position in the Middle East, Trump also addressed foreign policy, warning that Iran is seeking missiles capable of threatening U.S. territory — though he stated his “preference” remains for a diplomatic solution.

Lawmakers’ reactions highlighted deep political divisions. Republicans repeatedly gave standing ovations, while many Democrats remained seated in protest or heckled remarks on issues like immigration and economic policy.

The President sought to cultivate patriotic sentiment by inviting several special guests to the House chamber, including U.S. military heroes, a former political prisoner released after actions in Venezuela, and the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team.

In one of the evening’s most noted moments, Trump announced that Olympic goalie Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour, drawing widespread applause from lawmakers.

He also awarded the Purple Heart to a National Guard member wounded in service.

With approval ratings lagging and Republicans at risk of losing control of Congress, Trump used the primetime platform to frame his administration as successful and resilient. Analysts say the address was designed to rally his base and appeal to undecided voters by blending policy proposals with symbolic gestures of national pride.
