Trent Alexander-Arnold Suffers Hamstring Injury in Real Madrid’s Champions League Opener

The injury setback leaves Real Madrid with limited options at right-back as they continue their bid for a record-extending 16th European crown.

Real Madrid have confirmed that England international Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained a hamstring injury during their Champions League victory over Marseille on Tuesday night.

The former Liverpool star lasted just four minutes of the match before being replaced in Real’s 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu, marking a difficult start to his European campaign with the Spanish giants.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the club announced: “After the tests conducted today on our player Trent Alexander-Arnold by Real Madrid’s medical service, he has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury in his left leg.”

Reports in the Spanish press suggest the right-back could be sidelined for up to three weeks. His absence comes as a blow to manager Carlo Ancelotti, who had signed Alexander-Arnold in the summer to strengthen the position following Dani Carvajal’s injury troubles last season.

Ironically, Carvajal — who replaced Alexander-Arnold on the night — was sent off late in the game, leaving Real Madrid short-handed in defence. Both players will now miss the club’s next Champions League fixture against Kairat Almaty on September 30.
