President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, April 21, following a two-week stay in Europe, the Presidency confirmed on Thursday.
In a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the government assured Nigerians that the President remains fully in charge and continues to direct national affairs despite being abroad.
“President Tinubu left Paris for London at the weekend and has been in constant communication with key government officials,” the statement said. “He has also issued directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country.”
The statement, titled “Statement On President Tinubu’s Return To Nigeria,” was released in response to growing criticism from opposition leaders over Tinubu’s continued absence while the nation faces serious security challenges, particularly in Plateau and Benue states.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi were among those who voiced concern over Tinubu’s whereabouts, calling for more accountability during this period of heightened insecurity.
Despite the criticism, Onanuga stressed that the President’s absence is “temporary and in line with the communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks.”
He further urged the public to remain calm, assuring that “the President’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and his administration continues to function effectively under his leadership.”
The purpose of Tinubu’s stay in Paris and London was not disclosed, although the Presidency described it as part of a series of “working visits” he has undertaken since assuming office nearly two years ago.
President Tinubu is expected to resume official duties at the Aso Villa immediately after the conclusion of the Easter holidays.
