President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Amupitan took the oath of office at about 1:50 pm on Thursday at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu charged the new INEC Chairman to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthen the institutional capacity of the Commission. He urged him to ensure that elections across the country reflect transparency, fairness, and the will of the people.
Amupitan’s inauguration follows his confirmation by the Senate on October 16, after a rigorous screening session. He succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure earlier this month.
The new INEC Chairman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and renowned constitutional lawyer, is expected to lead the Commission ahead of several upcoming off-cycle governorship and local government elections across the country.
Further details of the ceremony and Amupitan’s inaugural remarks are expected to be released shortly.
