President Tinubu Commemorates National Police Day, Pledges Comprehensive Police Reforms
In a landmark address at the first-ever National Police Day celebration in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force into a well-equipped, well-trained, and tech-driven institution capable of effectively tackling crime across the nation.
Speaking at the event, which marked the culmination of the 2025 Police Week, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of ensuring that Nigeria’s security forces remain “steps ahead” of those threatening the nation’s peace and prosperity. The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, formally announced the institutionalization of April 7 as National Police Day, a day dedicated to honoring fallen heroes and recognizing the efforts of the police force.
“We are determined to leave no stone unturned in ensuring effective policing, the safety of lives and property, and resolving security challenges such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping,” Tinubu stated. He described a secure Nigeria as vital for the nation’s collective prosperity and outlined a series of initiatives aimed at supporting police welfare, including modern tools and technology, improved housing, healthcare, and education for officers’ families.
The President’s address highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at empowering the police force to meet modern security demands. These reforms include efforts to ensure that police officers receive better salaries, benefits, and resources that align with the risks they face daily in the line of duty. Tinubu stressed that these commitments would begin to materialize immediately, emphasizing that anything less would be unacceptable.
In his remarks, President Tinubu also praised the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, for advancing reforms aligned with his administration’s goals. He recognized the dedication and commitment of police personnel, noting that they are the cornerstone of Nigeria’s security and democracy.
The event also featured a guard inspection by Vice President Shettima, a procession by tactical units, and a silent drill display by police officers. The occasion was attended by top government officials, including the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRazaq Abdulrahman, and National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as well as lawmakers, security chiefs, and retired senior police officers.
