Tina Knowles, the mother of global superstar Beyoncé, has spoken publicly for the first time about her battle with breast cancer.
In her new memoir titled Matriarch: A Memoir, Knowles revealed that she was diagnosed with Stage 1A breast cancer after a long-overdue mammogram appointment uncovered a small cancerous tumor in her left breast. A second, larger tumor in her right breast was benign, but doctors recommended removing it as well.
“My doctor told me I had breast cancer,” Knowles wrote, describing the emotional moment she received the news.
The diagnosis came after years of postponing the crucial screening, highlighting the importance of routine mammograms and early detection. Her memoir sheds light on the emotional, medical, and familial aspects of her journey.
Knowles waited until the day she was diagnosed to tell Beyoncé. She said her daughter remained calm and focused, instantly taking charge of the situation. “She would find me the top specialist,” Knowles recalled. “I remember her telling me, ‘I want you to get a second opinion on whatever the course of treatment is.’”
Thanks to Beyoncé’s support, Knowles was able to consult one of the country’s top breast surgery specialists. Following surgery — which also included a breast reduction — Knowles wrote that she is now cancer-free.
Her story serves as both a cautionary tale and a message of hope, emphasizing the power of family support, proactive health care, and resilience.
