The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has unveiled its 2026 calendar of activities with a strong focus on grassroots development and talent discovery.
The calendar was presented and approved during the federation’s board meeting held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
In a communique made available to PUNCH Sports Extra, the board encouraged zonal bodies to organise more tournaments to help identify and nurture young athletes across the country.
Members also agreed that zonal national camps should be introduced to select players for the national camp and discover new talents.
The federation resolved to scout athletes with strong physical attributes who can be developed into future taekwondo stars.
Early preparations for the All Africa Championship scheduled for Morocco in April were also discussed, with the federation seeking corporate and individual sponsorship to support its plans.
In addition, the board approved the creation of a four-man committee to study and develop guidelines for club registration, affiliation and regulations governing the use of the federation’s logo.
The board reviewed challenges surrounding players’ registration and licensing due to inadequate data and agreed that the Secretary General must be more accessible to ease the process for athletes.
It was further agreed that the grading of coaches and referees would commence to aid proper selection and performance assessment.
The president dissolved all existing standing committees, noting that new committees would be constituted soon.
A one-minute silence was also observed in honour of the father of the federation’s Vice President, Reverend Abba, who recently passed away.
