SpaceX has begun installing equipment at its advanced chip packaging facility in Bastrop, Texas, as it moves closer to launching production before the end of the year.

The development was confirmed by sources familiar with the matter, who told Reuters that while the timeline has experienced some delays, the company is still working toward starting operations within the year-end window.

The facility will focus on packaging radio frequency (RF) chips used in products tied to Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet network.

SpaceX has been expanding its semiconductor capabilities as part of a broader strategy to strengthen control over critical hardware used in its space and communications systems.

The company recently unveiled plans to develop advanced chip manufacturing facilities at a large site in Austin, Texas, further signaling its push into deeper vertical integration of chip production.

One of the sources noted that although progress has been made, some delays have affected the original schedule. However, SpaceX remains committed to initiating production by the end of the year.

The move reflects growing efforts by tech and aerospace firms to reduce reliance on external semiconductor suppliers, particularly for specialized components used in high-performance communication systems.

The Bastrop facility is expected to play a key role in producing RF chips essential for Starlink operations, which provide satellite-based internet connectivity to users globally.

The broader expansion also aligns with Elon Musk’s long-term vision of building a more self-sufficient semiconductor ecosystem within his companies.

Elon Musk has increasingly pushed for internal chip development initiatives across his ventures, including aerospace and automotive applications.

Austin and Bastrop have emerged as key hubs in this expanding semiconductor and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
