The South African rand weakened in early Friday trading, pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar and developments in the oil market that are increasingly influencing its direction.

At 0701 GMT, the rand traded at 16.85 against the dollar, down about 0.5% from its previous close. The dollar has emerged as a clear safe-haven, strengthening over 2% so far this month.

The U.S. dollar rose 0.2% against a basket of currencies after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signalled one rate cut this year. Meanwhile, hawkish remarks from the European Central Bank (ECB), Bank of England (BOE), Bank of Japan (BOJ), and Swiss National Bank pointed to potential tightening amid inflation concerns driven by rising energy costs.

Andre Cilliers, Currency Strategist at TreasuryONE, noted, “The local currency will continue to take its cue from international moves, with a keen focus on what the oil price does.”

Domestically, traders will monitor South Africa’s composite leading business cycle indicator from the central bank and upcoming producer inflation data from the statistics agency for insights into the health of Africa’s most industrialised economy.

In bond markets, South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond strengthened in early trading, with yields falling 5.5 basis points to 8.995%.

The rand’s performance highlights the ongoing influence of global monetary policy, energy markets, and investor sentiment on Africa’s largest industrial economy.
