Chairman, SIFAX Group,, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi has called for a comprehensive overhaul of infrastructure across Nigeria’s seaports, describing it as the foundation for unlocking the vast potential of the country’s maritime and blue economy sectors.
Speaking at the 7th edition of the **Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime (TAAM) Conference**, held at the University of Lagos, Afolabi emphasized that Nigeria’s maritime sector holds immense untapped opportunities that could boost employment, attract foreign investment, and drive economic transformation.
“Nigeria’s blue economy is a sleeping giant,” Afolabi declared. “We have untapped potential along our vast coastline that, if harnessed responsibly, can create new jobs, strengthen our ports, attract investments, and safeguard our environment for future generations.”
He noted that the key to this transformation lies in building **modern, resilient, and sustainable port infrastructure** that enhances efficiency and global competitiveness.
Special Guest of Honour, Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming the maritime industry. He outlined reforms under the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, focusing on ports, fisheries, ocean governance, marine biotechnology, renewable energy, and coastal tourism.
The Minister highlighted ongoing projects, including the Western Ports Rehabilitation Programme, reconstruction of Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports and plans to revive the National Carrier-through public-private partnerships
Oyetola also noted Nigeria’s zero piracy record for three years in its territorial waters, a feat that has bolstered maritime security and regional confidence in the Gulf of Guinea.
He reiterated the importance of sustainability, urging that all port modernisation efforts should prioritise energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and waste minimisation.
Furthermore, he expressed Nigeria’s intent to secure a Category “C” seat on the IMO Council, aiming to play a greater role in shaping global maritime policy.
The Minister called for stronger collaboration between the government and academic institutions in advancing research in **marine robotics and frontier technologies.
The TAAM Conference, hosted in collaboration with the Maritime Forum, University of Lagos continues to serve as a leading national platform for dialogue on maritime development, policy innovation, and industry networking.
