Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to defeating terrorism, declaring that those responsible for recent attacks in the country will be decisively confronted.
Shettima made the statement on Wednesday during a visit to victims of the Maiduguri bomb blast receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the visit was aimed at sympathising with victims and reassuring them of the government’s support.
Condemning the multiple explosions that rocked Maiduguri on Monday, the Vice President described the attackers as barbaric, stressing that no cause can justify the killing of innocent people.
He noted that, in addition to directives already issued by President Bola Tinubu to security chiefs, the Federal Government is increasing investment in military equipment and logistics to strengthen the fight against terrorism nationwide.
Shettima said his visit was to express solidarity with the injured and families of those affected by the tragedy, assuring them that the government would provide necessary assistance through agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.
The Vice President was accompanied by Borno State Deputy Governor Usman Kadafur, NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar, and the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Ahmed Ahijo, alongside other top government officials.
The attack, which involved coordinated explosions in parts of the city, left more than 20 people dead and over 100 others injured, sparking renewed concerns over security in the region.
Shettima assured that the Federal Government remains resolute in its determination to restore peace and ensure that those behind the attacks are brought to justice.
