Shettima: Tinubu Administration Committed to Reviving Nigeria’s Cocoa Industry

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to revitalise Nigeria’s cocoa industry and expand the entire agricultural value chain. Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) led by its President, Mr. Chris Vincent, Shettima emphasized the government’s vision to transform Nigeria from a mere cocoa producer to a global processor and exporter of finished cocoa products.

The meeting took place on Monday at the State House in Abuja. Shettima noted that Nigeria was once a global leader in cocoa production but lost its competitive edge due to the discovery of oil and the shift in national priorities.

“We used to be one of the world’s leading cocoa producers, but because of the advent of oil, we have been relegated to the background now,” the Vice President stated.

He revealed that, as part of the drive to restructure the sector, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approved the establishment of the National Cocoa Management Board (NCMB). This body will oversee the revitalization of the sector, promote sustainable farming practices, and ensure forest preservation.

Shettima said the goal is to “walk the talk” by ensuring tangible outcomes in the short and long term. The initiative aligns with broader economic diversification efforts and seeks to empower farmers, boost exports, and add value to Nigeria’s agricultural commodities.

The visiting WCF delegation pledged continued support for Nigeria’s cocoa revival, noting the country’s vast potential to re-emerge as a major player in the global cocoa market.
