Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has urged the National Assembly to ensure that the ongoing constitution review process results in a people-oriented document that reflects the will of Nigerians.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a programme aired on Channels Television on Friday, Nwoko emphasized the importance of working with existing structures instead of discarding the 1999 Constitution entirely.
“The Patriots and other groups should work closely with senators and reflect exactly what they’re asking for. I do not subscribe to the idea that we should throw away the current constitution and create a new one. It’s a workable document,” he stated.
The senator’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to amend critical sections of the 1999 Constitution. The review, which began in early 2024, aims to address persistent issues related to federalism, local government autonomy, and judicial reform.
The process includes public hearings, expert consultations, and the review of citizens’ proposals to ensure inclusiveness and transparency.
Nwoko’s position echoes a growing sentiment that reform, rather than replacement, is the path forward — with a focus on making the constitution more reflective of the people’s needs while preserving its functional structure.
“We must enhance what we have and make it work better for Nigerians. That’s how to build legitimacy and continuity,” Nwoko added.
