Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is proudly sponsoring the Skate Lagos athletes to participate in the upcoming International Skate-a-Thon in Calabar 2025, where they will represent the state on a global platform.
This initiative highlights Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to promoting sports development across the state, including non-traditional sports like skateboarding, which has traditionally not received as much attention as other mainstream sports. The athletes are set to depart for Calabar on Tuesday, flying with Air Peace ahead of their opening games on Wednesday.
While Skate Lagos is not officially recognized as one of the 44 sports associations in the state, the governor’s decision to support the team has earned widespread commendation for his inclusive and forward-thinking approach to sports development. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s efforts ensure that all forms of athletic talent are nurtured, regardless of the sport’s prominence.
Hon Adebanji Atewogboye, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, played a pivotal role in recommending Skate Lagos for sponsorship, further solidifying the governor’s commitment to grassroots sports.
This support for the athletes comes at a crucial time, with skateboarding having recently been added to the Olympic Games. The sport’s global recognition is opening doors for athletes, presenting them with an incredible opportunity to compete on the world stage.
The Lagos State Sports Commission has praised the governor’s vision for empowering youth and promoting sports as a tool for youth development. Under the leadership of Hon Atewogboye, the state’s sports initiatives continue to thrive, keeping youth engaged and motivated through a variety of sporting activities.
By sponsoring Team Lagos for the International Skate-a-Thon, Sanwo-Olu’s administration demonstrates a long-term commitment to diversifying the state’s sports portfolio, creating opportunities for athletes across various disciplines to shine.
