The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) in improving the lives of retirees in Lagos State.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by PTAD’s senior management team, led by Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya, at Lagos House Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu aimed at enhancing the welfare of pensioners. He also highlighted Lagos State’s own efforts to ensure retirees receive their benefits promptly.

“We in Lagos State understand and appreciate the life and time of our pensioners. We know that they have served the government diligently. On the contributory pension, we are the only state today without any pension arrears,” Sanwo-Olu said. “If documents are complete, retirees should begin enjoying their entitlements within the first two to three months of exit.”

The Governor stressed that retirees deserve dignity, fairness, and a listening ear, noting that Lagos has cleared all pension liabilities over the last three years. He commended PTAD for its steadfastness and commitment to serving pensioners across the nation.

Earlier, Odunaiya emphasised the importance of a strong partnership between PTAD and Lagos State Government, noting that many of the nearly 200,000 Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) pensioners live in Lagos. She described Lagos as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse and Centre of Excellence, praising the Sanwo-Olu administration for its people-centric leadership.

Odunaiya also outlined two key PTAD reforms under the DBS scheme:

1. Pension Harmonisation Policy – addresses disparities in pensions caused by outdated salary structures, restoring social justice for retirees.

2. Healthcare Access via NHIS – eligible DBS pensioners can access medical care close to home without financial burden, administered through the National Health Insurance Scheme.

These reforms, approved by President Bola Tinubu in August 2025, aim to strengthen social protection, dignity, and overall welfare for senior citizens under the scheme, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
