The Lagos State Government has disbursed N460 million to 1,000 residents through the Eko Cares Financial Assistance Programme. The initiative, organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, took place on Wednesday at Agidingbi, Lagos, where beneficiaries received cheques ranging from N300,000 to N1.5 million.
The support covered various needs including business start-up funding, medical expenses, school fees, rent, and aid for persons living with disabilities.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said the programme reflects the state’s commitment to empowering vulnerable residents and promoting self-reliance. He described the initiative as a practical demonstration of compassionate governance.
“This presentation of cheques to over 1,000 vulnerable Lagosians is not just a ceremony; it is a celebration of compassion and our shared humanity,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Progress is not solely about infrastructure or numbers, but about how deeply we care for one another.”
He endorsed the broader reform efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging beneficiaries to view the financial aid as a seed of hope and an opportunity to build stability.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the Eko Cares initiative has continued to expand its reach.
“In 2024, we distributed N1.1 billion to 2,477 residents across the state. For this year, N1.6 billion has been set aside to support 2,850 more beneficiaries. This reflects our commitment to inclusive and impactful social intervention,” he said.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, said the programme represents the Lagos State Government’s dedication to compassion, equity, and empowerment.
He added that since its inception in 2020, the initiative has provided critical support to thousands of residents, reinforcing the principle that no one should be left behind in the state’s development journey.
