The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming education and investing in the intellectual growth of Lagosians, especially students in state-owned tertiary institutions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu made the declaration on Tuesday at the official commissioning of the newly constructed Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.
The ultra-modern library, described as the largest in any university in West Africa, features cutting-edge technology, digital research facilities, and innovation labs designed to enhance learning and research excellence.
In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project symbolised Lagos State’s enduring investment in knowledge and youth empowerment.
“This moment is deeply personal, not because this edifice bears my name, but because it represents the ideals that have shaped my journey — the belief that education is the bridge between potential and purpose,” the Governor said.
He added that the new library reflects the state government’s commitment to the THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises education and technology as the key drivers of sustainable development.
“Under our THEMES+ Agenda, we have continued to make education and technology the twin engines of development — from school infrastructure upgrades to the EkoDigital initiative, the LASU Technology Hub, and now this Library Complex,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the library was not a monument to self but a symbol of service and leadership aimed at impacting lives through access to knowledge.
He urged the LASU community — faculty, students, and staff — to guard the facility with pride, use it with purpose, and let it become the heart of their academic pursuits.
“Let this library inspire you to dream boldly, study passionately, and remember that Lagos State believes in you,” he added.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to education and human capital development. He urged other state governments to emulate Lagos’ approach to fostering learning and innovation.
“This architectural masterpiece will equip students with the tools to make Lagos a centre for educational excellence and a model for others to follow,” Alausa said.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule, described the library as a landmark commitment to promoting academic research and innovation.
Also speaking, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed appreciation to the Governor for his continuous support, noting that the new facility marks a historic milestone in the university’s development.
“The Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex is the biggest in any university in West Africa,” she said proudly.
The new LASU library is expected to serve as a hub for innovation, learning, and collaboration — further cementing Lagos State’s reputation as a leader in education and technology-driven governance.
