Arsenal F.C. moved a step closer to the Premier League title after a narrow 1–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. on Wednesday.
A first-half goal from Bukayo Saka secured the crucial win at the Amex Stadium, helping Arsenal extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points ahead of second-placed Manchester City F.C..
Saka, 24, marked his 300th appearance for Arsenal in style, becoming the fourth youngest player to reach that milestone for the club. His decisive moment came early in the match when his shot from the edge of the area deflected off Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba and slipped through the legs of goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Despite the victory, Arsenal struggled to dominate large parts of the match. However, the team’s defensive discipline and work ethic ensured they protected their slim advantage.
The result was further boosted by Manchester City’s surprise 2–2 draw with Nottingham Forest F.C. at the Etihad Stadium earlier on Wednesday, leaving the destiny of the title largely in Arsenal’s hands.
Although City still have a game in hand and are scheduled to host the league leaders in April, Arsenal have now recorded three consecutive league wins, easing concerns about their ability to handle the pressure of a title race.
Under manager Mikel Arteta, the Gunners appear more composed than in previous seasons. Arsenal surrendered significant leads that allowed Manchester City to win the title in 2023 and 2024, but they have shown greater resilience this campaign.
The club is now chasing success on multiple fronts, having reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, the final of the EFL Cup, and the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Brighton nearly took an early lead when Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya misplaced a pass just three minutes into the match. Baleba attempted a lob from outside the area, but defender Gabriel Magalhães cleared the ball before it crossed the line.
That scare appeared to wake Arsenal up, and they found the breakthrough in the ninth minute through Saka’s deflected effort.
The goal was only Saka’s second in his last 19 appearances across all competitions, but it proved enough to deliver three vital points as Arsenal edge closer to their first league title since 2004.
