Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called on the club to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, saying the 29-year-old would be a smart addition to the Red Devils’ front line.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the former England defender praised Watkins’ blend of experience, consistency, and goal contribution, noting his potential impact among United’s younger forwards.
“I think he [Watkins] would be a very, very good addition to the Manchester United squad,” Ferdinand said.
“He is 29, that is the only drawback… there’s not going to be any sell-on value, which I understand is an issue. But Manchester United need experience at the top of the pitch.”
Watkins scored 17 goals and provided 14 assists in 54 appearances for Aston Villa last season, helping the Midlands club secure a top-four Premier League finish and Champions League qualification.
Ferdinand pointed out that United’s current attacking options—including Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Chido Obi-Martin—lack the experience necessary to lead the line consistently at the highest level.
Though Watkins has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, no official bid has been reported.
The club has already made offensive signings such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but manager Erik ten Hag is still believed to be in the market for a seasoned striker.
United fans will now be watching closely to see if the board listens to Ferdinand’s advice and makes a move for the prolific Villa frontman.
