Tensions flared in Jos on Monday morning as residents took to the streets to protest the continued killings in Plateau communities by suspected Fulani militants.
The peaceful demonstration, led by prominent Christian leaders including the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Plateau State, Rev. Polycarp Lubo, began at the Fawvwei Junction community road. The protest caused significant traffic congestion, leaving many commuters stranded.
Residents expressed frustration and grief over the escalating violence, particularly in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, where more than 100 people have reportedly been killed in the past two weeks.
One of the protesters, Gyang Dalyop, told reporters:
“We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings.”
Another demonstrator, Hannatu Philip, pleaded with the government to take swift action.
“If the government doesn’t intervene now, the situation will get completely out of control,” she warned.
Protesters marched with placards bearing bold messages calling for justice and protection of indigenous communities. The procession made its way toward the Rayfield Government House, where demonstrators hoped to present their grievances directly to state officials.
The latest protest underscores growing public anger and desperation as security challenges continue to plague Plateau State.
