Premier League to Launch Semi-Automated Offside Technology Starting 12 April

New technology aims to enhance the speed and accuracy of offside decisions with VAR support.

The Premier League will introduce semi-automated offside technology starting on Saturday, 12 April, during Match Round 32. This marks a significant step forward in improving the efficiency and accuracy of offside decisions, following successful non-live testing in the Premier League and live operation in the FA Cup this season.

Semi-automated offside technology aims to support the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) by automating key elements of the offside decision-making process. The system uses optical player tracking to efficiently place the virtual offside line, enhancing the speed and consistency of decisions. Additionally, it generates virtual graphics to improve the viewing experience for fans, both in-stadium and through broadcasts.

The technology maintains the integrity of the decision-making process while ensuring that offside calls are made faster and more accurately. The Premier League has partnered with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and sports data company Genius Sports to develop the system.

With the integration of this cutting-edge technology, the Premier League aims to further enhance the consistency of its officiating, ensuring that offside decisions are both more efficient and transparent for players, officials, and fans alike.
