In a significant move to bolster the capabilities of law enforcement, the Nigerian Senate has approved a budget of N57,014,287,532.00 for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the fiscal year 2023. The allocation is set to address both capital and recurrent expenditures, with a focus on enhancing the operational capacity of the nation’s police force.

According to the approved breakdown, the capital expenditure portion amounts to N47,024,803,541.18, while the total recurrent expenditure is pegged at N9,989,483,990.00. The Senate’s endorsement of the 2023 NPTF budget followed a thorough consideration and adoption of the report presented by the Joint Committees on Police Affairs from both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senator Ahmed Mallam-Madori, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented the comprehensive report during a plenary session. The report acknowledged that this marks the fourth budget for the NPTF since its establishment in 2019. It also highlighted that the NPTF is actively implementing its 2022 approved budget, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing operational needs.

Key revenue sources for the 2023 NPTF budget include 0.5 per cent of the total revenue accrued to the Federation Accounts, totaling N56,205,355,774.00. Additionally, 0.05 per cent of the net profit of companies in Nigeria contributes N308,931,758.00, while aids, grants, and donations generate an additional N500,000,000.00.

In a separate development, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Prof. Tunji Olaopa as the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC). This dual affirmation signals a commitment to reinforcing critical institutions responsible for public safety and civil service administration, aligning with broader goals of governance and national development.
