Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a visit to victims of the devastating Onitsha Market fire incident, which destroyed parts of two major markets in the area. The fire, which occurred last week, ravaged the electronics market along Iweka Road and several warehouses on Ifejirika Street within the Main Market.
During his visit, Obi expressed deep sympathy for the traders who lost their goods and livelihoods in the inferno. He described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed concern for the traders who depend entirely on their businesses for survival. The fire destroyed goods worth several billions of naira, leaving many traders in dire need of support.
Obi called on well-to-do Nigerians to come to the aid of those affected by the disaster. He stressed that during moments like this, the collective humanity of Nigerians should shine through. He urged everyone to come together to rebuild the lives of the victims, restore hope, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines the nation.
In a show of appreciation, one of the affected traders, Mr. Jeremiah Nwabueze, who guided Obi through the destroyed market, thanked the former governor for his visit. He described Obi’s presence as deeply comforting and a source of solidarity at a time of immense loss.
Obi’s visit has brought much-needed attention to the plight of the traders, highlighting the importance of national unity and support for those in need during crises.
