Peter Obi Explains Absence from Papal Audience with Pope Leo XIV

Labour Party’s presidential candidate clarifies why he didn’t meet the Pope during Vatican event attended by world leaders.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, has explained why he did not meet Pope Leo XIV during the inauguration ceremony of the new head of the Catholic Church at the Holy See.

The event, held over the weekend, drew several world leaders, including Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who joined other heads of state in greeting the Pope during the Papal Audience hosted on Sunday.

Obi, addressing questions from supporters and media outlets, clarified that he did not attend the Papal Audience because it was exclusively reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats.

“After the inaugural Mass, I did not attend the Papal Audience and therefore did not have the opportunity to meet the Holy Father personally,” Obi said. “That honour was reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats. For those who desire such an encounter, the Papal Audience continues traditionally.”

Despite not meeting the Pope, Obi urged Nigerians and global citizens to reflect deeply on the Pope’s homily, which emphasized universal brotherhood and the need to transcend ethnic, political, and religious boundaries in the pursuit of peace and unity.

Obi further highlighted the importance of fighting corruption and prioritising national development through effective investment in education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure.

His statement received positive responses online, especially from his supporters, who praised his humility and focus on values over optics.
