Peter Obi Explains Absence at Buhari’s Burial

“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights,” he said.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has clarified the reason behind his absence at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking to journalists during a condolence visit to Buhari’s family in Daura on Wednesday, Obi explained that flight restrictions and unavailable air travel options made it impossible for him to attend Tuesday’s burial.

“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights,” he said. “Even if you had a flight, you couldn’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries attending the burial.”

Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, emphasized that honoring the dead is not limited to the day of burial. He noted that his visit was still within the customary mourning period.

“It is believed that the mourning continues today and tomorrow. Whoever comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he added.

Reflecting on his interactions with Buhari, Obi recalled a key moment during his 2023 presidential campaign.

“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That’s what I always remember,” he said.

Obi also praised Buhari’s efforts in fighting for the welfare of underprivileged Nigerians, adding that the former president did his best within his capacity.

“We all have to learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day we will be called back by our creator,” he concluded.

Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday in London and was buried in his hometown of Daura on Tuesday with full military honours. His funeral was attended by top Nigerian officials, international dignitaries, and traditional rulers.
