PDP Postpones Screening of Aspirants for 2025 National Convention

The delay comes just hours after former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, the exercise was suspended due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Fintiri explained that a new date for the screening would be communicated to all aspirants and party members in due course, while expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our Party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read.

He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a credible and hitch-free national convention, which is scheduled to hold between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The PDP had earlier, on October 25, 2025, named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet aspirants for various national offices ahead of the convention. The committee, chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate, was expected to begin its work on Tuesday before the postponement.

The delay comes just hours after former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman.

Lamido’s declaration has further stirred internal wrangling within the party, as northern PDP stakeholders had earlier endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as their consensus candidate for the same role.

However, factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, describing the process as lacking consultation — a development that underscores the party’s deepening internal divisions.

In recent months, the PDP has witnessed a wave of resignations and factional disputes, raising concerns about unity ahead of its critical national convention in November.
