Former Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has called on churches across the nation to shift their focus from prosperity preaching to promoting the virtues of hard work, integrity, and ethical living. According to Osinbajo, this change in emphasis could play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s social and economic development, helping the country to rise above its current challenges.
Speaking at a national conference in Abuja, Osinbajo emphasized that the teachings of religious institutions have a profound impact on the attitudes and behaviors of their followers. He argued that while the prosperity gospel, which emphasizes wealth and material success, has become increasingly popular in many Nigerian churches, it often overlooks the importance of hard work, discipline, and moral integrity as foundations for personal and national success.
“Nigeria will rise to greatness if our religious institutions, especially churches, prioritize the preaching of hard work, discipline, and moral integrity over the pursuit of material wealth. Prosperity is not an end in itself but a reward for diligence, innovation, and ethical conduct,” Osinbajo said. He stressed that by instilling these values in their congregations, churches could help cultivate a culture of responsibility, productivity, and national pride.
Osinbajo, who is also a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), acknowledged the role that faith-based organizations play in shaping societal norms and values. He urged religious leaders to use their influence to inspire Nigerians to adopt a work ethic that emphasizes diligence and service to the community, rather than focusing solely on financial gain.
“The message of prosperity is not inherently negative, but when it is emphasized at the expense of hard work and integrity, it can lead to a distorted view of success. We must encourage our people to understand that true prosperity comes from a combination of hard work, ethical living, and the grace of God,” Osinbajo added.
