A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the OPIC bus stop area when a container-laden truck reportedly lost its brakes and veered off the road, crashing into the local market and leaving one person dead and several others injured.
According to a motorcyclist who witnessed the incident, the truck, approaching from the Lagos axis, began to lose control just before reaching the OPIC roundabout. “There was no traffic,” the witness said. “He didn’t have brakes when he tried to enter the estate. To avoid the estate gate, he turned toward the market and crashed in.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the truck was not being chased and was the only vehicle involved in the incident. In an attempt to prevent a direct collision with the estate gate, the driver swerved sharply to the right, plowing into roadside market stalls instead.
The only confirmed fatality was a local tea vendor, who was preparing tea for his usual morning customers when the truck struck. One of the injured, a night security guard at the market, shared his harrowing experience.
“I was sitting with my people, waiting for the day to start. I had just taken a sip of tea when I heard the noise. The truck hit me, and I fell. God saved me—I fell to the right. If I had fallen the other way, I would have died. Sadly, the tea seller didn’t survive.”
Several others sustained injuries, though the exact number is yet to be confirmed. Eyewitnesses credited two parked vehicles—a van and a Sienna—for absorbing some of the truck’s impact, likely preventing additional deaths.
Emergency responders and local authorities are on-site, clearing the debris and assessing the damage. The truck driver has been arrested and is currently held by the Isheri Tactical Unit as investigations continue.
