The Democracy and Good Government Watch Initiative, a coalition of civil society organizations, has commended the peaceful conduct of the 2024 Ondo State gubernatorial election held on November 16, 2024.
The coalition, which monitored the election across all 18 local government areas of the state, praised the people of Ondo State for their exemplary participation in the electoral process, with voters turning out in large numbers to choose their next leader.
In a statement issued from Akure, the coalition expressed its admiration for the calm and peaceful atmosphere that prevailed throughout the election, noting that the conduct of the election was generally peaceful, with minimal disruptions or violence.
The coalition highlighted that Ondo State had once again demonstrated its commitment to democratic principles, reinforcing the credibility of the election in the eyes of both local and international observers.
Special recognition was given to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what the coalition described as an “excellent performance” in overseeing the election process.
The group praised INEC for ensuring a smooth voting process, and expressed optimism that the commission would deliver a credible conclusion with the timely announcement of the election results, in accordance with the law.
Security agencies were also lauded for their professionalism, with the coalition acknowledging their diligence in maintaining order at polling stations and ensuring that the election proceeded without major incidents.
Their preparedness and prompt response to any emerging issues were seen as key factors in ensuring the safety and security of voters, election officials, and other stakeholders.
Additionally, the coalition extended its commendations to the local and international media, as well as accredited civil society organizations, for adhering to the rules of engagement and observing the election in line with global best practices.
Their roles in monitoring, reporting, and documenting the election were seen as vital in enhancing transparency and trust in the process.
However, while the coalition celebrated the overall success of the election, it expressed concern over reported incidents of vote buying at some polling stations.
Though the coalition stressed that these isolated cases were not enough to undermine the integrity of the election, it underscored the need for vigilance and strong action to address this disturbing practice.
Vote buying, the group argued, continues to be a significant threat to Nigeria’s electoral credibility and needs to be thoroughly investigated.
Despite these concerns, the Democracy and Good Government Watch Initiative urged the people of Ondo State to maintain their calm and patience as INEC concludes the election process.
The group emphasized the importance of having confidence in the commission to declare the results in accordance with the will of the people, as expressed at the polls.
The coalition also encouraged the people to uphold peace and avoid any actions that might disrupt the post-election process, calling on all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the will of the electorate is respected.
The coalition reiterated its commitment to supporting transparent, free, and fair elections in Nigeria and urged the public to remain confident in the democratic process.
