Former Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has stirred controversy after branding current goalkeeper André Onana as one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.
In a candid interview with Serbian media, Matic, who spent three years at Old Trafford, criticised the Cameroonian shot-stopper’s form and decision-making, expressing disbelief at the club’s faith in Onana despite repeated errors.
“With all due respect, Onana is one of the worst goalkeepers I’ve seen at Manchester United. The club has had legends between the sticks—Schmeichel, Van der Sar, De Gea. It’s painful to watch some of the goals we’re conceding now,” Matic said.
Since joining United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, Onana has faced mounting scrutiny over his performances, particularly in big games. Despite flashes of brilliance, his high-profile errors in the Champions League and Premier League have drawn heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike.
Matic’s comments come amid increasing pressure on United manager Erik ten Hag to make changes, with some reports suggesting that the club may look for a new goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window.
Supporters have expressed mixed reactions to Matic’s remarks. While some agree that Onana has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, others have called the comments unnecessarily harsh, pointing to moments where the keeper has kept United in games with crucial saves.
Onana, for his part, has previously acknowledged his difficult start but vowed to improve, stating in a recent post-match interview: “I know I can do better. This club demands the best, and I’m here to fight for my place.”
Whether Matic’s criticism will light a fire under Onana or further strain the Cameroonian’s position at the club remains to be seen, but the spotlight on United’s goalkeeping situation just got a little hotter.
