Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of Oyo State and renowned mathematician, describing him as a patriotic Nigerian who championed justice, peace, and the nation’s progress until his final moments. Olunloyo passed away recently, and Obasanjo, in his statement released on Sunday, highlighted the profound loss to Nigeria, particularly during a time when the country’s leadership needs wise counsel and experienced guidance more than ever.
In a statement issued by his special assistant on media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo expressed shock and concern over the recent passing of prominent Nigerian leaders, including Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Edwin Clark, and now Dr. Olunloyo. The former president noted the diminishing ranks of the nation’s leaders, emphasizing how their invaluable experience and wisdom are urgently needed in these challenging times for Nigeria.
Obasanjo lamented, “The ranks of the nation’s leadership are fast depleting by the loss of our dedicated and resourceful patriots who served the nation in various capacities. This is particularly worrying at this crucial state in our nation’s history, when their wise counsel and rich experience are greatly needed.”
The former president also extended his condolences to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, as well as the government and people of the state. He reassured them that Olunloyo’s legacy of service, patriotism, and leadership would continue to inspire future generations.
Dr. Omololu Olunloyo had a remarkable career, starting as a commissioner in the old Western Region at the age of 27. He went on to serve as the governor of Oyo State from October 1 to December 31, 1983, before the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari interrupted Nigeria’s Second Republic. Olunloyo also held the revered title of Balogun of Oyo Kingdom, further cementing his influence and respect in the community.
Obasanjo concluded his statement with a prayer for the peaceful repose of Olunloyo’s soul, offering condolences to his family and the people of Oyo State. “We pray the Good Lord to grant the soul of Dr. Olunloyo a peaceful rest and the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Obasanjo added.
The passing of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo has left a significant void in Nigeria’s leadership, and his life remains a testament to the values of dedication, service, and patriotism.
