NSIB Issues Preliminary Report on Air Peace Boeing 737 Serious Incident in Port Harcourt

“These safety recommendations are designed to prevent recurrence and enhance overall aviation safety in Nigeria,” the Bureau stated.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its preliminary report on the serious incident involving a Boeing 737-524 aircraft (registration 5N-BQQ) operated by Air Peace Limited. The incident occurred on July 13, 2025, at the Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to the report, the aircraft was operating a scheduled domestic service from Lagos to Port Harcourt with 103 persons on board when it landed long on Runway 21 following an unstabilised final approach. The jet touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and rolled to a stop 209 metres into the clearway.

All passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries recorded.

However, initial toxicological tests raised concerns. The flight crew tested positive for substances including alcohol, while a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis. NSIB noted that these findings are under review as part of the human performance and safety management aspects of the investigation.

In its preliminary recommendations, NSIB directed Air Peace to:

  • Strengthen Crew Resource Management (CRM) training, especially on unstabilised approaches and go-around decision-making.
  • Reinforce crew fitness-for-duty monitoring and internal procedures before flight dispatch.

The Bureau stressed that this is an early report, with more detailed analysis and conclusions to follow in the final report. The preliminary document is available for download on the NSIB website.

“These safety recommendations are designed to prevent recurrence and enhance overall aviation safety in Nigeria,” the Bureau stated.
