The National Sports Commission (NSC) has released N200 million in training grants to 26 Nigerian athletes as part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The commission confirmed on Tuesday that the funds were disbursed through its Elite and Podium Board to selected top-performing athletes competing both locally and abroad.
The grants are expected to cover training, coaching, and preparation expenses ahead of major international competitions.
The beneficiaries cut across several sports, including athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, powerlifting, and para-sports such as para table tennis, para athletics and para badminton.
According to the NSC, the athletes were chosen after a careful and professional evaluation process led by the Yusuf Ali–headed Elite and Podium Board, set up to provide a more scientific and structured support system for elite performers.
Athlete welfare focus
Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to athlete welfare.
“Mr President has graciously increased our budget and given sports special financial considerations because he believes strongly in the power of sports and the potential of the Nigerian athlete,” Olopade said.
He added that the support is already translating into better performances and improved results at international competitions.
“The training grants disbursed to 26 athletes across different sports followed a careful and professional selection process. This is our way of reassuring our athletes that their welfare remains our utmost priority,” he said.
Olopade noted that the funding would significantly boost preparations not only for the Commonwealth Games, but also for other global events, including the Olympic Games.
“I often say that when we take care of our athletes, they will take care of the country by winning medals,” he added.
Medal ambitions
The latest disbursement marks the second round of grants within six months, according to the commission.
Nigeria will be aiming to improve on its Commonwealth Games record of 271 medals — 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze — when the Glasgow 2026 Games hold from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
