The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly update its records to reflect authentic party leaderships, warning that failure to do so could lead to national regrets ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Ogini Olaposi, said the lack of clarity over party leadership recognition has already begun to spark controversy in the political space.
“As the political umpire, INEC must be seen to do the right thing and save Nigerians from issues that may arise from a heated polity,” the NNPP stated.
The party emphasized that INEC must uphold court rulings and prevent undeserving individuals from hijacking political parties through what it described as “charades.”
Specifically, the NNPP expressed concern over INEC’s failure to update its website to reflect the court-recognised leadership of the party under Dr. Agbo Major and the Board of Trustees led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
“On Nov. 1, 2024, the Abia State High Court issued a decisive judgement recognising the BoT as the lawful authority in NNPP,” the party said.
“A subsequent ruling by the FCT High Court in Abuja reaffirmed this — yet INEC is yet to comply.”
The NNPP accused the commission of administrative negligence and hinted at what it called systemic sabotage, warning that the delayed compliance with binding judgments could erode public confidence in INEC’s neutrality.
“There is a lot of political scheming going on across parties that must be stopped to give the right people the opportunity to emerge on the right platforms,” the party added.
The party urged INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to uphold his integrity and ensure court judgments are obeyed in full, stating that “Nigeria is not a banana republic.”
“The Renewed Hope Agenda cannot thrive where institutions trample on court judgments,” the NNPP noted.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the party insists that transparency in party leadership recognition is crucial to a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
