The agency also urged airline operators to consult airport-specific weather reports to aid in flight planning and safety.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Monday through Wednesday, warning of unsettled weather conditions in the Northern, Central, and Southern regions.

In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) platform on Sunday, NiMet detailed varying intensities of rainfall and stormy weather across the nation, urging caution and preparedness.

On Monday morning, thunderstorms are expected over Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states. Cloudy conditions are forecast in the Central region, gradually giving way to thunderstorms later in the day.

For the North Central, NiMet predicted light rain in the early hours across Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa, followed by moderate rainfall over Plateau, Niger, the FCT, and Nasarawa.

By Tuesday, cloudy skies will dominate the morning across many parts of the country, but moderate rainfall is expected by the afternoon in the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara.
Wednesday will see thunderstorms and rain in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba during the morning, followed by evening storms in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, and Kebbi.

In the South, morning rains are expected in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Later, moderate to heavy rainfall will affect Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The Northern region will begin each day with either sunny skies or thunderstorms, with storm activity picking up in the afternoons and evenings, especially across Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, and Yobe.

On Tuesday morning, storms are forecast in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with extended rainfall expected into the evening across Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede rainfalls, especially in storm-prone areas, advising the public to take safety precautions, including:

  • Securing loose items outdoors,
  • Avoiding travel during heavy rainfall,
  • Disconnecting electrical appliances during storms, and
  • Staying away from tall trees or structures likely to fall.

The agency also urged airline operators to consult airport-specific weather reports to aid in flight planning and safety.

Residents are advised to stay informed through NiMet’s official platforms or visit www.nimet.gov.ng for real-time weather updates.
