The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has announced a change of date for its highly anticipated *Gastronomy Oriki Royal Festival*, earlier scheduled for December 6. The decision follows extensive consultations with key local and international partners.
Billed as an “Olympic gastronomy event,” the festival aims to break a Guinness World Record by creating the world’s longest dining table—an elaborate spread featuring royal aesthetics and diverse dishes representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to NIHOTOUR’s Director General, Aare Abisoye Fagade, the event is designed as a landmark exhibition of Nigeria’s heritage, wellness culture, and culinary excellence. He noted that the festival must not be rushed, as every detail is required to meet international standards.
“This is not just an ordinary gastronomy event; it is a deliberate and strategic Nigerian culinary brand statement,” Fagade said. “From the royal-themed table décor to the dishes, appetisers, and colourful attire of the chefs and servers—everything must align with Guinness World Record regulations. It is a huge task, and we want everything in perfect order before inviting Nigerians and the world to the table.”
Fagade added that the festival would also promote research into the health benefits of Nigerian cuisine, emphasising that food should excite the palate while enhancing wellness and happiness.
NIHOTOUR’s Director of Planning and Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Victor Salako, confirmed that the new date—likely in the first quarter of the new year—will be announced once all partner expectations are finalised. He revealed that Guinness World Records has already issued preliminary approval for the attempt.
“Our approach is intentional and deeply committed to offering the world a unique dining experience,” Salako noted. “We envision Nigerians and international guests seated at an exceptionally long dining table, sharing ideas and celebrating our food culture. Achieving this requires precise planning, and we are ready to set a new date as soon as Guinness World Records aligns with our proposals.”
