Abdourahamane Tiani arrived in Algiers on Saturday for a two-day working visit at the invitation of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and reinforcing good-neighborly relations between Niger and Algeria.
Tiani is accompanied by a delegation including ministers of national defense, health, and infrastructure. The visit follows recent diplomatic normalization, after Niger’s ambassador to Algeria resumed duties on Feb. 12, coinciding with Algeria’s recall of its ambassador to Niamey.
The trip also aligns with Algeria’s growing engagement in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), following a cooperation agreement with Burkina Faso on hydrocarbons, energy, mining, and training.
In recent months, the two countries have renewed collaboration on energy projects, including a January visit by Algerian oil company Sonatrach to discuss building a refinery and petrochemical complex in Niger. Additionally, on Feb. 11, Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria signed agreements to accelerate the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), aimed at transporting Nigerian gas to Europe via Niger and Algeria.
Bilateral trade between the two countries was estimated at $55 million in 2024. The visit signals a concerted effort to strengthen political, economic, and regional cooperation after past tensions following Niger’s July 2023 coup.
