Nigerians don’t give me enough accolades – Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage says her impact on Nigerian music has not been fully appreciated.

Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has expressed disappointment over what she perceives as a lack of recognition from Nigerians and the country’s music industry, despite her groundbreaking success and global influence.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Offair Show hosted by media personalities Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi and Toolz Oniru, the “Somebody’s Son” hitmaker said she feels underappreciated compared to her contributions to Afrobeats and African music at large.

When Toolz asked, “Do you think you’ve gotten your flowers from the industry?” Tiwa responded candidly: “No. I’m sorry, I don’t.”

Savage, often celebrated as the Queen of Afrobeats, has been a trailblazer for female artists on the continent, breaking barriers in an industry long dominated by men. From signing with global labels like Universal Music Group to performing at major international festivals, her influence has helped open doors for younger Nigerian artists in the global music scene.

Despite her achievements, Tiwa noted that recognition within Nigeria has not matched her international acclaim. “I’ve worked so hard to represent Nigerian music on the biggest stages, but sometimes it feels like my own people don’t see the full picture,” she added.

Fans on social media have since shared mixed reactions, with many agreeing that the singer deserves more appreciation for paving the way for women in Afrobeats.

Tiwa Savage remains one of Africa’s most awarded and streamed female artists, with over a decade of hits defining modern Nigerian pop music.
