Nigerian celebrities brought the heat and heritage to the global fashion scene at the 2025 Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the star-studded event celebrated precision tailoring and cultural identity — something Nigerian icons delivered with flair.
Among the head-turning attendees were Afrobeats stars Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr, literary icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and fashion designer Swanky Jerry. Each made a statement not just in style, but in cultural pride.
Tems wore a stunning African-inspired ensemble with a Western twist, incorporating Aso-Ebi print in a way that merged tradition with modern elegance. Burna Boy, dressed by Ozwald Boateng, stood out in a bespoke piece that he described as “specially made,” and was later seen in a viral video partying with British rapper Central Cee.
Ayra Starr brought her signature “sabi girl” energy in a sleek, unconventional floor-length gown that fused simplicity with bold fashion. Chimamanda Adichie, serving on the host committee, captivated in a powerful red gown, blending literary grace with fashion excellence.
Celebrity stylist Swanky Jerry wore a custom creation by Deji and Kola, captioning his look: “Heritage in every stitch. Legacy in every look.” His bold fashion statement reflected the night’s theme perfectly.
Also capturing attention was American-Nigerian actress Ayo Edebiri, whose attire paid homage to her African roots, featuring elements inspired by Benin culture.
The Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday in May, is fashion’s most prestigious night and raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has been steered by Vogue’s Anna Wintour since 1995, and this year was no exception in bringing together global icons for a night of culture, creativity, and couture.
